What Is the Difference Between a Blowout and a Wash-and-Style?

The terms get used interchangeably enough that it is worth being clear about what each one actually means, because they are not the same thing and the difference matters when you are deciding what to book.

What a Blowout Is

A blowout is a specific styling method: the hair is washed, then dried using a combination of a blow dryer and a round brush, section by section, to create a smooth, voluminous finish. The round brush is what does most of the work. It is used to tension the hair as it dries, which smooths the cuticle, adds shape at the roots, and creates the curved, polished look that a blowout is known for.

The result lasts. A well-done blowout holds for three to five days on most hair types, partly because the technique seals the cuticle and partly because the style is built into the hair as it dries rather than being applied after. That longevity is the whole point of a blowout bar, and it is why a lot of clients come in once or twice a week rather than washing at home.

What a Wash-and-Style Is

A wash-and-style is more general. It means the hair is washed and then styled, but the method and result can vary widely. It might be a blowout, or it might be diffused curls, a silk press, a twist-out, or any other finished look. At a traditional full-service salon, a wash-and-style often involves a roller set or finger waves as much as a round brush blowout.

The term wash-and-style tells you the sequence (wash, then style) but not the specific technique or result.

What We Do at Wish Dry Bar

We specialise in blowouts. Our signature service is the classic round-brush blowout that leaves hair smooth, shiny, and lasting through the week. If you want straight and polished or soft and voluminous, we can achieve either within the blowout format.

If you are not sure which service fits what you are looking for, the easiest thing is to tell us what result you want and we will recommend the right approach.

Available at both our West Vancouver and downtown Vancouver locations. Book online or walk in when we have availability.
