Wish Dry Bar

Which Vancouver Salon Does Makeup for Photoshoots?

Wish Dry Bar provides professional makeup for photoshoots at our downtown Vancouver location on the 5th floor of the Fairmont Pacific Rim Hotel at 1038 Canada Place. Our makeup artists specialize in camera-ready makeup that photographs beautifully under studio lighting, natural light, and all shooting conditions for corporate headshots, fashion editorials, modeling portfolios, personal branding shoots, and commercial photography.

Why Photoshoot Makeup Differs from Regular Makeup

I approach photoshoot makeup differently than everyday makeup because cameras capture more detail than what the human eye sees in person. Professional camera sensors pick up texture, color variations, and subtle shadows that go unnoticed in mirrors. Makeup that looks perfect in person might photograph flat or unfinished. Conversely, makeup that looks too heavy in person might photograph perfectly once the camera translates it into a two-dimensional image.

Lighting also changes how makeup photographs. Studio lighting creates harsh shadows that need to be corrected with strategic highlighting and contouring. Natural outdoor light reveals texture and requires flawless skin prep. Flash photography can wash out color, which means we need to use deeper, more saturated tones than what looks right in person. Understanding these technical factors separates makeup that works for photoshoots from makeup that only works for in-person events.

Corporate Headshot Makeup

Corporate headshot makeup needs to look professional and polished without appearing obviously made up. The goal is to even out skin tone, reduce shine, define features, and create a clean, professional appearance that photographs well. We use matte or satin finish foundations that do not create glare under studio lighting. We contour subtly to define bone structure without creating dramatic shadows. We keep eye makeup professional rather than trendy or bold.

Many Vancouver professionals book headshot makeup for LinkedIn profiles, company websites, conference speaker bios, real estate marketing materials, and corporate directories. These images represent you professionally for years, and investing in proper makeup ensures you look polished and confident rather than tired or washed out.

Fashion and Editorial Makeup

Fashion and editorial makeup allows for more creativity and drama than corporate work. We collaborate with photographers and stylists to create looks that match the editorial concept, wardrobe, and overall aesthetic of the shoot. This might mean bold graphic eyeliner, dramatic lip colors, unconventional color combinations, or avant-garde techniques that would never work for everyday wear but photograph strikingly.

We also adjust makeup between setups if the shoot involves multiple looks or wardrobe changes. Editorial shoots often require three to five different makeup looks throughout the day, and we stay on set to refresh, adjust, and completely change the makeup as needed.

Working with Photographers

Before any photoshoot, we communicate with your photographer about lighting setup, shooting location, whether the shoot is color or black and white, and what mood or aesthetic they want to achieve. This collaboration ensures the makeup supports the photographer's vision rather than working against it.

For studio shoots, we ask about lighting setup. Hard light requires different makeup than soft diffused light. High key lighting requires different preparation than moody dramatic lighting. For outdoor shoots, we ask about time of day and location. Golden hour light at the beach needs different makeup than midday light in an urban setting.

Personal Branding and Lifestyle Shoots

Personal branding photography for entrepreneurs, influencers, coaches, and creatives requires makeup that looks like an elevated version of your everyday style. The images need to feel authentic while still looking polished and professional. We enhance your natural features, even out skin tone, and create a camera-ready version of your regular look rather than transforming you into someone unrecognizable.

Lifestyle shoots that capture you in your work environment, at home, or engaging in your business activities need makeup that holds up through movement and different lighting conditions. We use long-wear formulas and setting sprays that keep your makeup fresh throughout the entire shoot without requiring constant touch-ups.

Model Portfolio Makeup

Model portfolio shoots require versatile makeup that showcases the model's range. We create multiple looks throughout the day, from clean beauty shots with minimal makeup to high-fashion editorial looks with bold colors and dramatic techniques. Each look needs to photograph distinctly different so the model's portfolio demonstrates their versatility to agencies and casting directors.

We also consider skin prep carefully for model portfolios because close-up beauty shots reveal every pore and texture. We use primers that smooth skin, foundations that photograph like skin rather than makeup, and finishing techniques that create a flawless canvas without looking cakey or heavy.

Timing and Rates

Photoshoot makeup takes 60 to 90 minutes depending on complexity. Simple corporate headshot makeup takes closer to 60 minutes. Elaborate editorial or fashion makeup takes 90 minutes or more. If the shoot requires multiple makeup looks throughout the day, we provide hourly rates for staying on set to refresh, touch up, and change makeup as needed.

For shoots requiring both hair and makeup, we coordinate with our hair stylists to ensure your complete look comes together efficiently. Most photographers book a two to three hour window for hair and makeup before shooting begins, which gives us adequate time to create polished results without rushing.

Product Selection for Photography

We use professional makeup lines that photograph well under all lighting conditions. MAC, NARS, Bobbi Brown, and other pro lines formulate their products with photography in mind. These formulas do not flashback under flash photography. They do not oxidize or change color under hot studio lights. They maintain their finish and appearance throughout long shooting days.

We avoid products with SPF in them for photoshoots because SPF creates white cast in flash photography. We use HD formulas when appropriate because they photograph smoother than traditional formulas. We select primers and setting sprays that control shine without creating unnatural matte finishes that look flat in photos.

Skin Prep for Photography

Proper skin prep makes more difference in photography than in person. We start every photoshoot makeup application with thorough cleansing, exfoliating if needed, and moisturizing appropriate to your skin type. We use primers that smooth texture, fill pores, and create an even canvas for foundation. We address any dry patches, oily areas, or texture issues before applying color products.

For close-up beauty photography, we spend extra time on skin prep because the camera will capture every detail. We might use facial razors to remove vellus hair that creates texture and shadow in macro photography. We moisturize lips thoroughly before applying lip color. We groom and fill brows meticulously because they frame the face in every shot.

Downtown Vancouver Studio Access

Our location at the Fairmont Pacific Rim is convenient for photographers shooting in downtown Vancouver studios, at waterfront locations along Coal Harbour, or at the Convention Centre. We are also close to popular outdoor shooting locations including the seawall, Canada Place, and Gastown streets. If your photographer is shooting at a downtown location, you can get your makeup done at our salon and walk to the shoot location within minutes.
