How Much Should You Tip Your Wedding Hair Stylist?

Tipping your wedding hair stylist is standard in Canada, and most stylists do expect a gratuity for wedding work. The question is what the right amount is and how to handle it practically on the day.

The General Range

For wedding hair, most brides tip somewhere between 15% and 25% of the service cost. The higher end of that range reflects the level of service, how much you loved the result, and whether the stylist went out of their way for you, accommodated last-minute changes, or did exceptional work under time pressure.

For context, if your bridal hair service costs $200, a 20% tip is $40. If you had multiple people in your party styled, some brides tip on the full party total and others tip per stylist. Either approach is fine as long as the amount feels proportionate to the work done.

On-Location Work

If your stylist came to you, the tip should reflect that. Travel adds time, effort, and logistics on their end. Tipping at the higher end of the range, or adding a flat amount on top of a standard percentage, is a thoughtful acknowledgment of what on-location work involves.

The Practical Part

Have cash set aside in envelopes before the morning starts. Label them by stylist if there is more than one. Give one trusted person, often the maid of honour or a parent, responsibility for distributing them. You will not want to be thinking about this while you are getting your veil pinned.

If you are paying by card and want to add the tip there, ask ahead of time whether the salon processes tips on the card or prefers cash. It avoids any awkwardness on the day.

Is Tipping Required?

It is not mandatory, but it is the norm and it is noticed. Stylists who work weddings take on a level of responsibility, pressure, and scheduling complexity that a regular appointment does not carry. A gratuity is a meaningful way to acknowledge that.

If something went wrong or you were not happy with the result, that is a different conversation. Talk to the salon directly rather than simply not tipping, since most reputable salons want to know and will try to make it right.
